# auth code

authorization code

A secret code the domain owner gets from the current registrar and gives to the new registrar to approve a transfer. It protects against unauthorized transfers. In June 2026 the ICANN Board adopted a change that will rename it Transfer Authorization Code and make it usable once. That change is not yet in force.
