# data protection authority

A public body that enforces the GDPR in a European Union country and can fine those who break it. Some countries, such as Germany, have more than one. The European Data Protection Board brings together the head of one authority from each country and the European Data Protection Supervisor. Its letters to ICANN shaped the WHOIS changes.
