# expired domain takeover

The risk that arises when a domain lapses while other things still depend on it: email accounts, software, name servers or links. Whoever registers it next can receive that traffic or mail and may abuse the trust. In 2024 researchers gained control of a former .mobi WHOIS server name this way.
