# mitigation actions

The steps a registry or registrar takes to stop or disrupt DNS abuse, as its ICANN contract requires. Examples are suspending the domain, changing its name servers, or alerting the registrant or the hosting company. The right step depends on the harm and on whether the domain was hacked or registered for abuse.
