# registry acquisition

A business deal in which a company buys a registry operator, or one or more of its TLDs. For a gTLD, the deal also needs a contract step: ICANN must approve moving the Registry Agreement to the buyer, or the change in who controls the operator. Such deals are a regular subject of industry news.
