# assignment of a Registry Agreement

The contract step needed when a gTLD is sold. Its Registry Agreement with ICANN is moved to a new registry operator, or control of the current operator changes, and ICANN must approve either one first. It is often part of a business deal in which a company buys a registry or its TLDs.
