# reserved name

A name that a registry keeps out of normal registration. Some are reserved by rule. For example, ICANN's standard gTLD contract makes registries hold back names needed to run the TLD, such as nic and whois, and country and territory names. Others are held back by the registry for its own use or for later sale. Lists differ by TLD.
