# thin registry

A registry that stores only technical data for each domain, such as registrar, name servers, status and dates, while the registrar keeps owner contacts. The .com and .net registries long worked this way. An ICANN policy to make them thick was deferred in 2019, and its requirements passed to the Registration Data Policy on 21 August 2025, so they no longer have to switch.
