# WHOIS history

Stored past copies of a domain's registration record, kept by private companies that have collected WHOIS and RDAP answers over the years. They show earlier holders, name servers and dates. Registries and registrars do not publish this history themselves. It is used in investigations, disputes and checks before buying a domain.
