# WHOIS sunset

The end of the duty for gTLD registries and registrars to offer WHOIS, on 28 January 2025, except for .com, .name and .post. From that date RDAP is the official way to look up gTLD registration data. Providers may still run WHOIS by choice, and ccTLDs were not affected, so the old protocol has not disappeared.
