# wildcard record

A DNS record whose name starts with an asterisk, answering for any name under a domain that has no record of its own. Parking pages often use it. The gTLD Registry Agreement bars registries from making unregistered names resolve, by wildcard or otherwise, at any level they run. Such lookups must return NXDOMAIN ("does not exist").
