# auDA panel recommends tightening .com.au and .net.au eligibility rules

## in plain words

Australia's domain registry auDA is considering new rules for .com.au and .net.au addresses. Right now you can register a domain just because it describes something you sell or an event you run. A review panel wants to remove that option, so domains would mostly have to match your actual registered name or trademark instead.

Australia's domain name registry auDA is moving toward tighter rules for who can register under .com.au and .net.au. Currently, applicants can qualify in two ways: either the domain matches their registered name, an acronym of it, or an Australian trademark, or it describes a service, product, event, activity or premises they offer. A review panel's final report, made public on September 6, recommends eliminating the second route entirely.

Under the proposed change, a flower seller named Meyer who currently qualifies for blumen.com.au because he sells flowers would instead only be eligible for meyer.com.au, unless he registers a matching business name or trademark. auDA's board approved the panel's recommendations in principle in August and has directed management to prepare an implementation plan.

The rule change would apply only to .com.au and .net.au; direct .au registrations require only an Australian presence, not a matching name, while .org.au, .asn.au and .id.au have separate criteria.
