# Identity Digital applies for 216 new top-level domains

## in plain words

Identity Digital runs many website endings, like .live and .world. The company just applied to create 216 brand new endings, covering topics from artificial intelligence to crypto to bakeries. The boss in charge of sales explained why the company likes offering lots of choices instead of just a few.

Identity Digital, the registry operator behind endings such as .live, .digital, .life and .world, has applied for 216 new top-level domain strings in the 2026 application round, according to Domain Name Wire. The applications fall into 13 categories, including AI, Web3 and Crypto, Finance, Commerce and Retail, Media and Creators, Tech and Infrastructure, Trade and Industry, Professional Services, Travel and Hospitality, Identity and Trust, Gambling, Generic, and Health and Wellness. The AI and Crypto categories are new compared with the company’s 2012 application round.

Matt Overman, Identity Digital’s chief revenue officer, said the company’s portfolio approach reflects a belief that people and businesses want different kinds of names, so offering a wide range of extensions helps more people find one that fits their identity. He said this strategy, used in 2012, continues in this round.

Several of Identity Digital’s chosen strings overlap with names other companies have already disclosed, including .bit, .crypto and .agent. The company appears to have hedged on .agent by also applying for the shortened variants .agnt and .agt. Its list also includes generic strings like .good, .view and .hub, alongside niche industry names such as .bakery, .glasses and .tea, echoing existing strings like .plumbing, .glass and .coffee.

Beyond its own applications, Identity Digital also serves as backend registry service provider for other companies’ proposed top-level domains, some of which may end up competing directly with its own applications in contention sets. Overman said separate teams handle the company’s owned-and-operated portfolio and its registry services business.

Overman noted that the company’s backend platform has been significantly upgraded since the 2012 round, aiming to make it easier for registrars to carry new extensions, since registration can only happen if registrars choose to offer a given string. He added that if the applications succeed, the new extensions will run on the same platform registrars already use.

Identity Digital still must decide which applied-for strings to pursue and which to drop, having largely skipped filing backup replacement names, suggesting confidence in its primary choices.
