# Meta needs permission from a Colombian department to use .meta

Meta Platforms applied for the .meta top-level domain in ICANN's 2026 expansion round and says it plans to use it as a dot-brand for its own domains only. Because Meta is also the name of a Colombian department on the ISO 3166-2 list, ICANN's rules treat .meta as a geographic name that needs a permission letter from that department's government.
