Automattic applies for 16 new top-level domains, including .matt

Automattic, the company behind WordPress, has applied for up to 16 new top-level domains, including .matt, .wordpress, .woo, .tumblr, .craft, .hire, .human, .jazz, .make, .mesh, .pod, .pop, .robot, .soul, .story, .vibe and backup strings like .php. The company already runs .blog, which has around 375,000 registrations. Several of the new applications, such as .wordpress, .woo and .tumblr, are dot-brand domains, while .matt appears tied to founder Matt Mullenweg’s first name.

OpenAI applies for 15 new top-level domains including .agent and .gpt

OpenAI has applied for fifteen new top level domains, including five dot-brand strings (.chatgpt, .codex, .oai, .openai, .gpt) and generic terms like .agent, .skill and .voice. OpenAI is one of thirteen applicants for .agent, competing with Google and Meta, while two other companies also applied for .gpt. Rival Anthropic applied for just two dot-brands, .anthropic and .claude.

D3 launches Frontier membership for early access to future new gTLD domains

D3, a core contributor to Doma Protocol, unveiled a new program called Frontier at Korean Blockchain Week in Seoul, aiming to give members priority access to desirable names in upcoming top-level domains. The launch follows ICANN's 2026 new gTLD application round, which drew more than 1,600 applications before closing last month, with new extensions expected to go live in late 2027 or early 2028. Frontier lets members earn points through activity with partnered blockchain vault providers and then assign those points to specific domain names to secure a place in line ahead of general availability, without needing a registry relationship or broker. CEO Fred Hsu said the first vault runs on the Solana blockchain, with further vaults planned on Hyperliquid and Base.

Verisign launches certificate status service and applies for .pki domain

Verisign has announced Verisign Informed, a new security product aimed at preventing reliance on outdated certificate information, and confirmed it has applied for the .pki top level domain. The company says the service addresses what it calls stale trust, where systems make decisions based on cached or old certificate data. Verisign Informed works as a certificate status service, returning a cryptographically signed OCSP response that shows whether a certificate has been revoked. The product is currently in limited beta, with a general launch planned for the first half of 2027, while ICANN is due to reveal all new TLD applications, including Verisign's bid for .pki, on Wednesday.

ICANN to reveal new gTLD applicants and strings on October 7

ICANN will publish its Reveal Day list on October 7, 2026, disclosing which entities applied for which new top-level domain strings in this year's expansion round, which drew over 1,600 applications. The release, scheduled for 18:00 UTC, will include replacement strings, contention sets and public portions of applications. The Internet Commerce Association will host a free webinar the next day featuring gTLD experts to analyze the results. The reveal also triggers a two-week window for applicants to switch to replacement strings, with String Confirmation Day set for November 17, 2026.

Link Freedom Group submits over 300 new gTLD applications before deadline

ICANN's application window for its latest round of new generic top-level domains closed on August 12, 2026, after opening in April. According to dnjournal.com, Link Freedom Group filed more than 300 applications, apparently making it the most active applicant in this round. ICANN is expected to reveal full details of applied-for strings and applicants in the coming months.
